The inaugural “Darwin Syringe Festival” will be held in and around Darwin
from the 3rd of August until the 11th of August 2002.

The syringe festival will serve a number of purposes:

·        It will highlight the human rights abuses faced by injecting drug users in the
Territory on a daily basis,

·        It will increase community awareness on issues around blood borne viruses
and needle and syringe programs,

·        It will increase community awareness of the impact of prohibition on the health
and wellbeing of drug users,

·        It will allow for the celebration of drug culture (reality)  and

·        It will enable people to get involved in the struggle to end the “War on Drugs” on a number of different levels.

Draft Timetable of Events

Note: we are currently seeking groups or organizations who would like to facilitate an activity during the Darwin Syringe Festival. We would promote the event and all you have to do is show up and run it.

Any ideas will be considered.

We are also seeking musicians, skaters and other performers to be involved in the various events of the Darwin Syringe Festival. It’s your festival. Call us now on 0415 16 2525 or email darwinsyringefestival@yahoo.com

Saturday 3rd August: Opening Party – Bands currently being sought

Sunday 4th August: Sausage sizzle in Palmerston: Come and meet the
NAP and PARIAH mobs as we ask

“Where is the Palmerston needle exchange?”

Monday 5th August: Forum on Hepatitis C virus for drug users and their families

Tuesday 6th August: Opening of Syringe Art exhibition

Wednesday 7th August: Candlelit March for people who have lost their lives due to the
“War on Drugs”.

Thursday 8th August: Film night, protest films and other films to be decided

Friday 9th August: Any ideas???

Saturday 10th August: Smoke-up for Human Rights – Raintree Park

(Prize for best syringe costume.)

Sunday 11th: August: Poetry reading and Tea Party

The syringe art exhibition will take two forms. There will be a poster section and
posters will need to have at least one syringe in the poster...
(or to have been drawn or
painted with syringes)

...and to promote the Darwin Syringe Festival dates, email and
phone number.

The gallery for the Syringe Art poster competition will be your local
neighbourhood.

We want to see Syringe Art posters all over town. 

The second component of the Syringe Art will be a sculpture competition where syringes must be used. The sculptures will be displayed in a gallery or another venue.
