NORTHERN TERRITORY DRUG LAWS
May 15 2002
Protesters Storm Northern Territory Parliament

On the 14 May, 12 protesters stormed the Northern Territory Parliament (live audio report). The protest followed several other public demonstrations of dismay at the NT Labor government's proposed drug laws - laws the protesters say amount to a "zero tolerence" policy that will overwhelmingly affect the homeless, poor and the aboriginal population of Darwin.
Much gratitude to Melbourne Indymedia for their support, courage and professionalism -- from the NAP and PARIAH mob.

Much ado about nothing from the NT media, about water being spilt on the Speaker's desk during the struggle with Gary Meyerhoff and Security guards...

...let us put this into perspective

NT Labor running riot: opposition
March 15 2002
(Extracts)

"Ms Carter said she was shocked to hear a former government adviser had crept into the territory's parliament house to have sex on Speaker Loraine Braham's chair."

Ms Carter said she was deeply concerned about the security breach that occurred when former press secretary Andrew Kilvert and a woman crept into parliament house to have sex there after his last day on the job.

"This Labor employee gained access to the chamber to have sex through our lobby," she said.

"We don't really care what goes on up in the Labor Chief Minister's offices.

"They can party to their heart's content but their parties should not spill down into our security areas where we keep our papers.

"And by no means should people be having sex in a very public place, a place that really should have a great deal of respect in the chamber of the parliament." AAP

Steamy night in NT parliament:

THE Opposition is outraged and the Chief Minister is talking in grave tones after it was revealed a couple had sex in the speaker's chair in the Northern Territory's parliamentary chamber.

Mr Kilvert, who ended his time with Labor acrimoniously after falling out with one of the chief minister's close advisers, is unrepentant.

"We are some of the few people to enter that chamber with honourable intentions," he said.

Some spilt water would seem a trivial occurrence -- compared to semen and other bodily fluids. No-one was charged for the 'sex in the Speaker's chair' incident.

Wicking saw the absurdity of the Parliamentary over reaction too...

NT News - (16 May,2004)
by Camden Smith

"...an armed police officer was stationed at the front of the desk of Parliament House yesterday in the wake of the invasion of the Legislative Assembly."

What a lame media beat-up against NV activists. (It gets even lamer)

We can't exclude the activist who took the most
punishment inside Parliament House.

Ema was kicked while supine on the floor -- and grabbed by her breasts by a male Security person.

This sexual groping seems common in the Northern Territory.

Ask the female protesters present at Jabiluka about the NT's elite
Tactical Response Group.

"A well-known 'Darwin media personality' not only witnessed Ema being kicked, but came forward and told us about it."

Gary shows the reporter his
protective gloves.
"I witnessed it also and yelled out at Ema's assailants."

Ema was only excluded from the group shot -- because she took the photograph.

She did a great interview as well. Making the point that human rights in the NT (not drugs) are the main issues.

"The right to smoke a 'mildly euphoric herb' without being imprisoned or beaten by armed thugs is a human
right. The drug is ancillary to that right." (mick lambe)
