Letter to Ted Egan re Ema Corro

Dear Sir

I’m writing to you in regard to my friend Ema Corro. Ema was imprisoned on Friday 7 October for an offence related to the drug law reform campaign of the Network Against Prohibition.

I have known Ema for 3 years, and have found her to be an intelligent and serious young woman. I am concerned about the harm she could suffer from incarceration. Imprisonment should be used as an absolute last resort, in cases where an individual is violent or dangerous or some kind of serious threat to the community. Ema does not fall into this category by any means.

Ema has been under enormous pressure and stress over the last three years, largely because of the tough NT Government response to the ongoing campaign by the Network Against Prohibition. She has already suffered enough and paid the price for whatever transgressions she may have committed.

She poses no danger whatsoever to anybody or anything. Her continued incarceration is a burden on taxpayers to no end. For some time now she has not even been involved in any Network Against Prohibition activities. Neither has she lived in Darwin for some time.

I respectfully ask that you end her suffering by pardoning her unconditionally and releasing her from prison forthwith.

Yours Sincerely

Stuart Highway
