Public warned of potentially deadly drug

Alice Springs police are warning people against using a drug referred to as the new speed.

The Detective Acting Superintendent Michael Murphy says police have received information an injectable adrenaline is being sold in the town for recreational use.

He says if used inappropriately, the drug can cause convulsions, brain haemorrhage or death.

"We've got a current investigation under way to identify the source of where the adrenaline has come from. It is traceable through batches. However, these are distributed to a number of health facilities in the region," he said.

Detective Murphy says police have reports the drug is being distributed in glass containers with blue stoppers.

"We're concerned with the devastating effects attached to this, if taken incorrectly, such as death, so we need to educate the public about not administering this drug or identifying who has it and reporting it to us in a timely manner," he said.

Detective Murphy does not believe the adrenaline was among supplies destined for remote communities as part of the Federal Government's intervention.

** NAP comment: In this instance the police are absolutely correct regarding adrenaline. Strange as that occurrence is, please you mob in Alice Springs and elsewhere in the NT, Adrenaline is a BAD recreational drug, it's for medical emergencies only. Don't use it.
