Toyne happy with jail changes

The Northern Territory Justice Minister says he is pleased with changes that have been made to the Alice Springs prison in response to a disturbance last year which saw inmates set fire to mattresses.

Peter Toyne visited the jail this week and inspected the part of the maximum security prison where eight inmates barricaded themselves into a room in mid-November and burnt mattresses.

Dr Toyne says he commended officers for the way they handled the incident.

The Minister says a number of physical changes were made to the layout of the room, but he cannot reveal the details for security reasons.

"It's part of any facility delivering a service that you learn from events as you go along and I think what I saw was that jail management has fully reviewed the incident to make the response easier or safer," he said.
