Drug unit proves its worth

DRUGS with a potential street value of $2 million have been seized by the Remote Community Drug Desk since it was introduced 11 months ago.

The unit has laid more than 200 charges since last February and seized almost 400kg of kava, 21kg of cannabis and 49 cannabis plants.

More than $25,000 in cash also was seized by police officers, as well as five vehicles. Seven hydroponic labs were discovered and 65g of amphetamines were seized.

There are eight members in the unit, including an intelligence officer.

Their job is to co-ordinate and implement strategic and tactical operations that are aimed at disrupting the distribution of drugs to and within remote communities.

Drug Enforcement Section Acting Superintendent Les Martin said the collaborative approach between sections of the NT Police had proved a resounding success.
