Stuart back in maximum

Stuart Highway contacted Napatista Gary Meyerhoff by telephone this morning.

Stuart reports that yesterday he refused to leave the visiting area after a visit, to protest against the appalling conditions in the crowded medium security area of Darwin Prison.

He was placed in a 'punishment cell' for a short period before being moved back into maximum security.

Stuart said: "There are all these people locked up in shocking conditions.

"People are packed in like sardines."

Stuart has applied to see the Prison's official visitor today and he will outline his concerns about conditions in the NT prison system.

In other developments, Stuart is still hoping to appeal against the conviction and sentence for the 6th-Smoke-in incident that has landed him in jail. NAPNT members have been communicating with legal aid and it is hoped that they will act soon.
