Opposition backs planned criminal code changes

The Northern Territory Opposition has thrown its support behind proposed changes to the criminal code that would remove intoxication as a mitigating circumstance in violent crimes.

The proposed amendments will also see the creation of a specific offence of dangerous driving causing death or serious harm.

The Government argues the existing categories covering this offence can be difficult to prove or have a low penalty.

During debate on the bill in Parliament, Opposition Leader Jodeen Carney also urged the Government to consider setting up a parliamentary committee to examine why there is such low conviction rates in the Northern Territory for rape and other sexual offences.

Debate on the proposed changes is continuing.
