Alice Springs community to go 'dry'

The Liquor Commission has strongly indicated it will approve an application to make Abbotts Camp in Alice Springs a dry community.

An official decision is yet to be made but the Liquor Commission chairman John Flynn today told representatives from Abbotts Camp he was most likely to approve the application.

At the informal hearing, camp representatives were encouraged to discuss the issue in language.

Speaking afterwards, the camp president Kevin Wirri said he was overjoyed after years of knockbacks.

"I'm really excited and all the time we got knocked back and yeah I thought we were gone," he said.

The Commission chairman reserved his decision until after an inspection of the camp today.

Earlier in the hearing Commander Mark Coffey said police supported the application in principle but wanted the dry status initially introduced only as a trial.
