NT Govt asks for federal commitment to non-sniffable fuel

The Northern Territory Government is calling on the Commonwealth to give a commitment to the roll out of non-sniffable fuel or opal in the Territory.

The federal Health Minister, Tony Abbott, is in Darwin today to launch a new educational resource book, aimed a teaching people about the dangers of sniffing petrol.

The Territory's Minister for Community and Family Services, Delia Lawrie, says the resource kit is welcome, but non-sniffable fuel is also needed.

"I'm welcoming the visit by Tony Abbott to come here and launch this resource," she said.

"But I hope while he's here he announced a wider roll out of the non-sniffable Opal fuel throughout the Territory where it's really needed, because $6 million expansion that Canberra has announced doesn't go far enough."
