Mecca for sniffers

The recent Howard Government's decision not to subsidise Opal fuel in Alice Springs will turn the town into a "honey pot" for petrol sniffers, according to Alice Springs Mayor Fran Kilgariff.

"Petrol sniffers will drift into town if the Federal Government fails to subsidise non-sniffable Opal fuel in all parts of Central Australia," she said.

Earlier this year all members of the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LAGANT) voted for the Federal Government to support the motion to subsidise unsniffable fuel across the whole of the Northern Territory.

The council has now written to all senators asking them to support the subsidy across the Territory if it comes under consideration in the Spring parliamentary session.

A subsidy across the Territory will ensure no community, whether remote or urban, is unfairly disadvantaged, said Mayor Kilgariff.
