Activists face jail for anti-Johnny protest
Two Darwin-based social justice activists face sentencing at Darwin Magistrates Court today for trespass charges arising from a protest against Prime Minister John Howard in Darwin in September last year.
Well known activist Stuart Highway, a member of the drug law-reform group the Network Against Prohibition, has been told to expect a custodial sentence.
He has been assessed for home detention by the Northern Territory Department of Corrections.
Social justice and environmental activist Justin Tutty will also be sentenced today.
The pair, convicted on July 29, will be sentenced by Magistrate John Lowndes at 9.30am.
Highway told the court of the reasons for the protest, including the crimes against humanity carried out by Howard’s government in cahoots with other Western governments.
He said that “in any system of law he would be on trial, not me”.
