Accused heroin smuggler in suicide attempt

Police in Bali say one of nine Australians awaiting trial on heroin smuggling charges there has tried to end her life.

Chief Inspector General I Made Mangku Pastika says Renae Lawrence, 27, attempted suicide last week in her jail cell and was saved after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

"We don't know where she got [the razor blade] from," he said.

"Psychological analysis shows that ... she is emotionally unstable."

Dubbed the "Bali Nine" by the media, the eight men and one woman were arrested in April with more than 11 kilograms of heroin at a Bali airport.

Their arrests followed a 10-week operation involving Australian and Indonesian police.

Police have completed the investigation into the case of Renae Lawrence and the case could begin in court as early as mid-August.
