No real change under ‘Laberal’
The re-election of the Northern Territory “Laberal” party on Saturday will make no difference to existing problems of anti-social behaviour in Casuarina, says the Network Against Prohibition candidate, Scott White.
Referring to the two major parties’ zero-tolerance policing policies, White told ABC morning radio listeners today that “80 or 800 police” would not be the solution.
“There can’t be any real change when we have a two-party system where the only policy . . . is who’s tougher than the other,” White said.
“Unfortunately that’s all that’s going to get in on Saturday.
“There’s no real choice for people who want . . . sustainable change in their community.”
Asked what a vote for him would mean, Scott, 29, said: “A serious . . . look at the reasons why there is violence in our communities and drug-misuse . . . and the laws which perpetuate that, and that means prohibition.
“Eighty or 800 police would not change that.”
White, who coined the term Laberal to describe the two major parties, reminded listeners that ALP incumbent Kon Vatskalis had labeled (NAP) fascists; that he was facing a jail term under Labor for his role in a non-violent political demonstration, and that the CLP were “more progressive now days” than the ALP.
