Consider a few facts
WHILE everyone is transfixed by Schapelle Corby’s tearful pleas of innocence, perhaps we should focus on a few facts (provided by legal experts in media reports) about her case before we conclude that she’s telling the truth and the Indonesian court system is working against her.
1. Hydroponic marijuana is (reportedly) in big demand by tourists and expatriates in in Bali.
2. She blames Australian baggage handlers but there is no evidence that they have ever trafficked marijuana.
Why would a drug dealer employ a baggage handler to smuggle 4kg of marijuana from Brisbane Airport and then into a stranger’s bag, just to send it on to Sydney? Why not just send it by road?
3. The vacuum-sealed bag containing marijuana was the same size and shape as the boogie board bag and almost perfectly fitted the boogie board bag that Corby admitted owning.
4. Her version of events relating to the opening of the bag at Bali customs are disputed by three officials present at the time.
5. Corby did not notice the extra weight: 4kg is not exactly light.
The court that sentenced Corby was the same one that sentenced to death the Bali bombers. We can’t say that the system is fair for the bombers but unfair for Corby.
