CLP promises expansion of DNA testing at crime scenes

The Country Liberal Party (CLP) has pledged that police will conduct DNA tests at every crime scene in the main centres of the Northern Territory.

The CLP leader, Denis Burke, says if his party wins Saturday's election, extra resources would be allocated to forensic services as part of a $3.2 million package of additional money for law and order.

He says a CLP government would also create a database with the DNA profile of every person apprehended, no matter what the crime.

"From little things big things grow, petty criminals become major criminals," he said.

"We've got to make sure we've got a DNA test on them straight away, we built up our database so we can make sure we catch those crims in the early stages and if they become recidivous or major criminals we've got the database already on them.

"The CLP Government put in the first DNA legislation, other states picked it up, it is the future."
