Brown promotes Green alternative to voters jaded by other parties

The NT needs a Green MLA in Parliament, federal Greens Senator Bob Brown said yesterday.

Senator Brown was in Darwin to help the 11 NT Greens election candidates on the campaign trail in the lead-up to the June 18 poll.

“Getting a Green in on the floor of the Parliament makes things happen – the Greens really add a positive alternative,” he said.

“This is a three-horse race – and the Greens are the unknown.

“You should keep your eye on them – they are the good option for the people who are fed up with both the older parties.”

Candidate for Nightcliff Ilana Eldridge said: “We are there when the old parties go the same way.”

The Geeen’ main election issues include stopping development in the Daly region, protecting Darwin Harbour, stopping uranium mining and pushing for container deposit legislation.

Senator Brown also said he was disappointed at NT Labor’s policy to jail habitual drunks who refuse treatment.

“I am amazed that Clare Martin has policies which look like those of the CLP itself,” he said.

“The indigenous people need better than simply reverting to the police prescription, which was the hallmark of the previous government.”
