80 candidates to contest NT poll

Eighty candidates have registered to contest the Northern Territory's June 18 poll.

The opportunity to nominate has closed and a draw is under way at the head office to determine the order the candidates will be listed on the ballot paper.

Most seats have two to three candidates although some have up to five, including the seat of Goyder.

After much speculation the Litchfield Shire president Mary Walshe has confirmed she will contest the seat.

A record of 11 candidates have nominated for the Greens.

There are also a number of regulars who have nominated including Stuart Highway, who will run as an independent in the seat of Nightcliff.

About 40 candidates and their supporters were at the electoral commission office, quietly witnessing the ballot draw.
