Salvo cash stays here
Territorians angry over the Schapelle Corby case are refusing to donate to charities for fear their money will go to Indonesia.
Captain Peter Wood from the Salvation Army said several people had questioned where the funds from the annual Red Shield appeal would go because “they didn’t want to give money to Indonesia”.
“It took me back at first but there’s a lot of sentiment out there,” he said.
We probably had five people asking where the money was going because of the Schapelle Corby case.”
The Salvation Army’s Red Shield appeal started last weekend and will go through to June 5.
So far, $37,000 has been raised in the NT and $14,500 in Darwin. But that’s down on last year.
Capt Wood wants to reassure donors their money will be spent only in Australia, on Australian families. “We use the money to run services like our family support services and our drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres.”
People can donate to the appeal at shopping centres, Bunnings stores and the Savings and Loans credit union offices.
