Prison system will stay public

Territory prison officer services will not be privatised, the Department of Justice has said.

Prison guards were concerned that a report into assets recommended outsourcing.

But department chief Richard Coates said it was a draft and had no official standing.

"It has not been considered by the department so the recommendations it contains are not indicative of what DoJ may decide to do in the future," Mr Coates said.

He said there were "no plans whatsoever" to privatise NT prisons or their security staff.
