NT Govt not planning random drug testing

The Northern Territory Police Minister says he is not planning to follow Victoria by introducing random drug testing of motorists.

The trial testing program got under way this week with drivers being saliva-tested for amphetamine and cannabis use.

Paul Henderson says the Territory's police force is putting more of its resources into random breath testing for alcohol.

"We've seen some extraordinarily high readings from across the Territory," he said.

"People shouldn't drink and drive, they should have a 'sober Bob' or take a taxi.

"Random drug testing of drivers is not under active consideration at the moment but the government is monitoring the Victorian trial."
