No drug tests for NT drivers

Territory police have ruled out introducing roadside drug testing.

From this week drivers in Victoria are subject to random roadside saliva tests to detect traces of cannabis and amphetamines.

A statement released to the Northern Territory News yesterday outlined the policy of NT police.

"NT police have no plans to trial drug testing of drivers at this stage," the statement read.

Implementation of drug testing for drivers in the future will be a matter for consideration by the Territory Government."

Police Minister Paul Henderson has previously said that roadside testing is too slow and expensive to be used in the Territory but the Government would monitor the implementation of technology in other states.
