Man fined over esky cannabis crop

The Darwin Magistrates Court has fined a man for cultivating 14 cannabis plants in an esky under a fish tank lamp.

Travis Smoothy pleaded guilty to cultivating a trafficable quantity of cannabis.

The court heard Smoothy planted seedlings and watered them every day.

He added a light from a fish tank to assist the plants to grow.

Smoothy's defence lawyer, Alan Woodcock, said his client originally planted 15 seeds in the hope that one would grow successfully for personal use.

Mr Woodcock said his client was not going to sell or give the plants away.

Chief magistrate Hugh Bradley fined Smoothy $1,000.

He released the defendant on a bond of $4,000 and ordered him to be of good behaviour for two years.

Smoothy will also undergo drug testing during that period.
