NT and beyond

Magistrate David Loadman said he thought the courts should be allowed some discretion in forfeiting vehicles caught taking liquor into dry communities. He said in court that a vehicle worth $70,000 had been forfeited to the court recently after bringing liquor into Maningrida – a ''disproportionately high penalty'' when vehicles seemed never to be returned. He suggested an organisation such as NAALAS could lobby the NT Government to change the law to allow magistrates discretion.
