Not to be sniffed at

Artist Gwenda Poulson has used spray paint to smarten up Alice Springs Hospital.

She was among a group of young people from Yuendumu to take part in the art project with paint donated by Peter Toyne.

The Health Minister bought 814 cans of spray paint from Mad Harrys when the cut-price store stopped selling paint in May.

“We had kids in Alice who were chroming, putting their health and safety at risk, and action by retailers, youth workers, police and government had an immediate effect in curbing chroming around Alice,” Dr Toyne said.

“Now we have these great artworks… produced using the spray cans that were causing so much harm.”

The NT Government will introduce legislation to further tackle the substance abuse problem.
