Cop Conference may come to NT

Territory police will use a conference in the US to try to net an international policing conference for the Territory.

The International Association of Woman Police (IAWP) is holding its annual training conference.

NT police are sending a delegation to the year's conference in Boston to stake it's claim for the 2007 event.

If successful, the conference would be expected to host up to 700 delegates, and it is estimated that the conference itself could bring up to $1.2 million to Darwin.

A team of five - headed by Deputy Commissioner Bruce Wernham - will lobby for the 2007 conference to be held in Darwin while in Boston this week.

Sergeant Jo Foley, Senior Constable Kerry Leg, Laura Dewsom and Kym Cheatham complete the team.

Sgt Foley said the NT had about 26 per cent women in the force, and this was increasing.

Fifteen per cent of commissioned officers were women, she said.
