Crime cash up for grabs
The Northern Territory News has learned that the new laundering laws will be introduced to parliament this week.
Attorney-General Peter Toyne is expected to announce the changes today.
A Government source told the Northern Territory News last night: "Now we are not only seizing a criminal's assets but the funny money that they've been able to obtain by illegal purposes.
"It also means anybody who provides money or resources to a criminal activity can also be taken to court.
"This is important in relation to terrorist organisations or crime gangs trying to raise cash for their activities.
"This law makes it harder than ever for criminals to profit from their crimes."
Last week the Northern Territory News revealed
The Laundering Bill will make it an offence to deal with the proceeds of a crime or deal with property used to carry out a crime.
It will remove obstacles to confiscating criminal assets and prevent those assets from being invested in further criminal activity.
The bill is also aimed at starving illegal terrorist groups of funds that could go towards global terrorism activity.
The bill is part of the Territory Government's crackdown on the proceeds of crime through the Criminal Proceeds Forfeiture Act.
The Act targets the criminal profits and personal assets of drug dealers, allowing confiscation of the property of a declared drug trafficker with three or more convictions for serious drug offences.
