Stuart Highway to run for Lord Mayor of Darwin

Veteran activist and drug law reform campaigner Stuart Highway will lead the Network Against Prohibition Campaign to take control of the Darwin City Council.

Highway has been nominated by NAP members to run for the position of Lord Mayor. A number of NAP members will also stand for positions as Aldermen in at least 2 wards.

NAP intend to use the election campaign to highlight some of the human rights abuses perpetrated every day in the City of Darwin, against illicit drug users, indigenous people and young people. NAP members aim to challenge recent drug hysteria and to tackle racist members of the Darwin City Council who are trying to introduce a permit system for indigenous people who want to visit the city.

Highway and crew will also use the campaign to galvanize community opposition to a US military base being established in our city.

Highway said “Their fun shouldn’t cost us ours!”

The Network Against Prohibition will launch their campaign at their 17th Community Smoke-in for Human Rights in Raintree Park on Saturday the 8th of May at 12 noon.
