MLA wants jail farm open

Gunn Point prison farm should be reopened for minimum security prisoners, Nelson MLA Gerry Wood has said.

Reopening the site would fulfil a recommendation of Correctional Services' Path To Good Corrections Report, which said a prison farm should be developed.

"The Gunn Point site would be more appropriate than developing a farm near the Darwin Prison," Mr Wood said.

"It would remove the prisoners out into the bush away from the city. It would also be a more appropriate site for the re-establishment of a cattle operation."

The Gunn Point site would be more beneficial to indigenous low-security prisoners, Mr Wood said.

He also recommended keeping the Wildman River camp open to reduce pressure on Darwin's prison.
