Investigators of major mysteries watched over
Teams of Territory detectives are on the lookout for cases which they feel need reinvestigation.
The ability to reinvestigate all of the Territory’s major crimes – even current investigations – comes under the Major Crime Plan, Assistant Commissioner Grahame Kelly said. The plan was revamped following the Falconio investigation.
It was used most recently in the investigation into the murder of two Darwin-based Thai prostitutes in March.
Mr Kelly said the plan is constantly being refined.
But he said one of its key points was the constant monitoring of investigations by teams of impartial detectives.
“The major crime plan is a plan that we activate when serious crime, like murder, occurs,” he said.
“It’s been redeveloped since Falconio and every time we use it we tune it up so there’s a constant refining of the model that we use.
“Part of it is an investigation review process so even ongoing investigations can be identified for review by a non-involved team who have the expertise to look at an investigation with fresh eyes.
“That’s a quality measure that we have now built into our systems – we can apply that pretty much anywhere now.”
