Only 9 days to go til the Syringe hits Darwin
Darwin’s drug using community, numbered in their thousands, have only 9 more days to wait until the commencement of the 2nd Darwin International Syringe Festival.
Inspired by the introduction of NT Chief Minister Clare Martin’s drug house laws, the Syringe Festival is a combined protest, wake, discussion and celebration all rolled into the one event.
Drug users will be able to:
• Protest against the ongoing devastation caused by the war on drugs, in Australia and around the world,
• Take time to remember those who we have lost because of the stale and moralistic approach to illicit drugs taken by our society,
• Discuss different tactics to enable a speedy end to the war on drugs, and
• Celebrate the diversity and strength of the drug using community and drug culture.
Events include an opening party (21st Sep), drug users cabaret dinner – featuring the Nogies (NAP awards 23rd Sep), a dance party (25th Sep) and a drug law reform rally at Parliament house 27th Sep.
The Syringe Festival also includes the 1st International Conference on Using Direct Action to End the War on Drugs. This will be the first time that drug users from around the world will meet together to discuss the use of direct action tactics as a response to the human rights abuses we face.
Already, users are making tracks to the Top End from the Southern States and other visitors will be arriving by air in the next week or so. Delegates are confirmed from Thailand, the UK, Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne.
The conference will run from the 22nd to 25th September at the Railway Club in Parap from 11am to 6pm each day. Anyone with an interest in ending the war on drugs and/or the use of direct action to achieve a political goal should not miss this important event.
