NAP pickets Labor Conference

Ministers and members of the Northern Territory's Labor Party were yesterday confronted by drug law reform activists who picketed the annual weekend long Party conference.

A small group of activists armed with banners, placards and a megaphone were evicted from the Italian Club by management, whilst attempting to gain access to the conference within. The activists, members of the Network Against Prohibition, were attempting to communicate with Labor Party Members and supporters to suggest they pass a motion repealing Labors Tough on Drugs "drug premises" legislation.

Despite being denied access to the conference, NAP campaigners continued their protest outside the property. For several hours, Labor ministers and supporters who took fresh air (ie/cigarette) breaks were
subject to a cacophony of amplified rants and rapping, challenged by drug users to consider moves toward reality based drug legislation and acknowledgment of the discrimination and human rights violations drug users in the Northern Territory are subject to.

Only 1 brave Labor member, (under obvious pressure from colleagues to investigate the motives of the "protesters" ) accepted invitation from NAP activists to discuss the current Government's stale, overtly moral, zero tolerence toward illicit drug use.
