Oppose the NT Police State on the 8th of February

Darwin residents and visitors will have an opportunity to voice their concerns around the Drug House legislation and the NT Government’s proposed “Terror” laws at Raintree Park on Saturday the 8th of February at the 8th NAP Community smoke-in.

Both of these initiatives massively increase the powers of the NT Police. This should be of major concern to everyone. These initiatives coupled with the new youth “curfew” indicate the ALP’s continuation with the CLP’s police state approach to the NT.

In 2003 NAP, the Network Against Prohibition will continue our struggle against the Police State and human rights violations in the Northern Territory. February’s smoke-in will be the first of our monthly smoke-ins and as always will feature live music, speakers, free food, some nice cakes and lots of the smokey stuff!

The smoke-in will continue with the previous smoke-ins focus on the war on iraq, a war that we should all oppose. We are keen to hear from you if you want to speak on this issue or promote another anti-war event.

We hope to see you on the day at Raintree Park. As you might remember, Darwin City Council have been reluctant to issuse NAP with a permit for Raintree Park. NAP feels that this attempt at “censorship”, is inherently political and violates our alleged democratic rights to confront government policy. It’s essential that we have as much community support as possible on this day, we must not be afraid to challenge what we know is wrong.

As ever, NAP is in dire need of volunteers. We need people who can help with promotion, speaking, setting up, music etc. If you are interested in helping out, please call NAP phone on 0415 16 2525. Our weekly meetings will resume Tuesday 21 January at 19 Gilbert Street, Ludmilla, bring your ideas for an evening of networking, brainstorming and strategic planning.
