Plea for treatment

Darwin drug expert Dr David Meadows says drug addiction is a medical problem, as illustrated by the many cures offered to nicotine (cigarette) addicts.

"And if you treat a diabetic by injecting insulin then you should be able to give buprenorphine to treat a drug addiction," he said yesterday.

"You can't cure hypertension but at least you can control blood pressure by taking tablets.

"If someone wants to give up smoking or grog there are services available and such people get the very best of care.

"We have to stop this carnage that keeps on destroying lives."
